TheatreWorks New Milford Announces 2014 Season Productions Rolled Out at Festive Reception at Spruce Home & Garden

NEW MILFORD, CONN. (November 11, 2013) – Recently, TheatreWorks announced its 2014 line-up of theatrical performances at a party hosted by Spruce Home & Garden, a retailer of upper-end home products and accessories, on Bank Street in New Milford. Over 100 subscribers, donors, and special guests, along with the Board of Directors of TheatreWorks, gathered for a few hours to mingle and dine on appetizers from New Milford's Ristorante Lucia, which then hosted a post-event party at the restaurant.

Guests were also treated to desserts and treats, courtesy of Sweet Sarah artisan confectionary of 21 Bank Street, New Milford.

The evening culminated with a presentation of TheatreWorks' 2014 season, which includes five mainstage shows, five free staged readings, plus the agenda for the ever-evolving TW Kids programs for both young thespians and teens.

"We're extremely grateful for this continued partnership between the local business community and TheatreWorks," said TheatreWorks' President, Glenn R. Couture. "It's an honor to unveil our upcoming season with partners such as Spruce, Lucia, and Sweet Sarah, who are as committed as we are to making the greater New Milford region a great place to work and play. We are very proud to be able to continue to provide Broadway-caliber theatre at ticket prices that are much more affordable than Broadway."

Couture announced that the company's 47th season will kick off in February with Neil Simon's first theatrical hit, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, to commemorate the play's 50th anniversary. In this classic, comedic romp, newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratter are proof positive that opposites attract. He's a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer; she's a free spirit. But they quickly discover married life is no paradise, having to endure a new apartment that's falling to pieces, surprise visits from Corie's overly protective mother, and that's just the beginning of the marriage.

In May comes THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO by Alfred Uhry. Winner of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play, this comedy-drama focuses on Ballyhoo – the social event of the year for Atlanta's elitist German-Jewish community in 1939. Particularly, it focuses on the Freitag family, well-known members of this aforementioned community and, among other things, the bias which occurs toward "undesirable" Eastern European Jews within their own community. Unexpected romantic, touching, and comedic events unfold as the characters face where they come from and who they really are.

In July, Adam Peck's BONNIE & CLYDE will be making its East Coast premiere 80 years after the infamous couple met their fate. The play is not based on the 1967 Arthur Penn film of the same title. The show is an intimate re-telling of the final hours of two young people who stopped at nothing to realize their American dreams. With humor, desperation, and tenderness, these legendary outlaws are made human again, resolving their issues and getting their affairs in order.

Opening in September is AVENUE Q, the 2004 Tony Award-winner for Best Book, Music, and Lyrics. Featuring Book by Jeff Whitty and Music & Lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, the show is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood, considering it's inhabited by both people and puppets.

Rounding out the season in December is Ken Ludwig's THE GAME'S AFOOT or HOLMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS. It's December 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast-members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, danger and hilarity collide in this farcical whodunit set during the Christmas Holidays.

TheatreWorks also continues its "Page2Stage" series of free staged readings in 2014 with five selections. These selections, along with the upcoming events for the TW Kids program can be found on TheatreWorks' website: WWW.THEATREWORKS.US, or by calling the box office at (860) 350-6863.

TheatreWorks is an award-winning, regional theatre company located on 5 Brookside Avenue, just off Route 202 (next to the CVS), in New Milford, Conn.
